Shaved 1.8s off LCP and conversions moved less than I expected

Spent two weeks on performance for a client site. LCP from 3.4s to 1.6s, CLS basically zero, all green.

Conversion rate change: +3.1%. Statistically real, commercially underwhelming for two weeks of work.

Not saying performance does not matter. Saying that if your conversion rate is bad, it is probably not your LCP, and the performance work is a comfortable thing to do instead of the uncomfortable thing, which is fixing your offer.

Performance work is procrastination with a dashboard. Said with love as someone who has done exactly this.

Where it did pay for me was organic — rankings on mobile moved more than conversions did. Different payoff than you were measuring for.

Building boring sites that print money. Case studies in my journey thread.

From 3.4 to 1.6 is a big jump. What was the actual bottleneck in the end?

Infrastructure nerd. Proxies, VPS, headless everything.

Three third-party scripts the client could not justify and eventually agreed to drop. The code was never the problem.

This is the most honest performance post I have read. Everyone else reports the Lighthouse score and goes quiet about revenue.

Ecom. Four stores, one that matters.
