How many words should a blog post be in 2026?

I keep seeing "1,500 words minimum" and also "word count does not matter". Which is it?

For context I am writing about dog grooming tools and my posts are coming out around 900 words before I start padding them.

Day 9 of learning. Journey thread incoming once I have something to show.

If you are using the phrase "before I start padding them" you already know the answer. Write until the question is answered and then stop.

Word count is a symptom, not a lever. Pages rank long because thorough answers take space, not because length is rewarded.

Link builder. If it ranks, it is whitehat enough for the client.

Look at what ranks for your exact query. For "best dog grooming brush" it is probably a 1,200 word listicle. For "why is my dog scared of the brush" it is 400 words. Intent sets the length.

Currently: 14 sites, 11 of them bad.
