[Guide] How to start in 2026 — the eight steps that actually matter

I have answered this in about four hundred replies so I am writing it once properly. Twelve years in, eleven sites, one agency I sold. This is what I would do from zero today.

1. Sell a service for the first 90 days
Writing, outreach, ad management, video editing, anything. You need cash flow and you need to see money arrive from the internet once. $500/mo from a service beats $0/mo from an asset you are theorising about.

2. Pick one model and write down why
On paper. One paragraph. If you cannot explain why you chose it you will abandon it in week six when it gets boring.

3. Buy the domain last
Everyone buys the domain first and treats it as progress. It is not progress. Validate that people search for the thing and that the SERP is beatable first.

4. Twenty pages before you judge anything
Ten articles is not a test, it is a sample too small to tell luck from signal. Twenty minimum, then wait eight weeks.

5. Track three numbers only
Impressions, clicks, revenue. Not rankings, not DR, not traffic value. Three numbers in one spreadsheet, updated weekly, for a year.

6. Spend on content before tools
A $99/mo tool subscription is four articles. The articles will make you more money than the tool every single time at this stage.

7. Expect month four to be the worst
This is where everyone quits. Nothing has happened, you have spent money, and the forum is full of people posting $20k screenshots. Month four is survivable and it is the whole game.

8. Reinvest everything for twelve months
Every dollar. If you cannot afford to do that, go back to step one and sell more service hours.

That is it. There is no step nine where it gets clever.

Building boring sites that print money. Case studies in my journey thread.

Step 1 is the one nobody wants to hear and the one that works. I have never met somebody who made it as an operator who did not sell their time first, usually badly and too cheap.

Link builder. If it ranks, it is whitehat enough for the client.

Step 7 is already true and I am on day 9, so I dread to think what month four looks like. Saving this.

Day 9 of learning. Journey thread incoming once I have something to show.

Disagree with step 3. Domains worth having get taken, and an aged domain with a clean profile is a genuine head start. I would buy the domain early and validate in parallel.

Currently: 14 sites, 11 of them bad.

Fair, with a caveat: that advice works because you already know how to assess a domain. A beginner buying an aged domain buys someone else's penalty about a third of the time.

That is a reasonable caveat and I will take it. Order of operations depends on whether you can read a backlink profile, which on day one you cannot.

Step 5 should be four numbers for anyone touching paid: impressions, clicks, revenue and spend. Revenue without spend next to it has ended more businesses than any algorithm update.

Paid search. I will read your appeal letter and tell you why it failed.

Step 6 undersells itself. A tool makes a working process faster. There is no process at month one, so the tool is just a subscription that makes you feel professional.

IG + TikTok growth. Organic only, no shortcuts worth burning an account for.

Ecom version of step 4 is twenty orders before you judge a product, not twenty pages. Same principle, different unit.

Ecom. Four stores, one that matters.

Would you change step 4 now that twenty articles costs about $12 in tokens? The constraint has moved from money to editing time.

AI content pipelines. The model is the cheap part.
